Power saving tips for your notebook

When you spend a lot of time on the road with your notebook, you wish for longer battery times of your notebook now and then. Here are several tips for lowering the power consumption of your notebook. My Dell XPS M1330 with a standard battery has a battery lifetime of 3 hours, but this is greatly dependent of the type of work that I do.

  • Use a low brightness setting for your display. Lower brightness means lower power consumption. If possible buy a notebook with a led display, like my Dell XPS M1330.
  • Use a power control utility like NHC, Speedswitch or Rightmark CPU Clock Utility. These programs allow you to lower the processor speed when you don’t need it. I will post a review of these programs in a post nest week.
  • Don’t use processor intensive applications.
  • Close applications you don’t use (including browser tabs), Flash apps can be processor intensive)
  • Buy extra memory for your machine. Extra memory will lower the number of read and writes to your hard disk.
  • Defragment your harddisk regularly.
  • Turn of system devices which aren’t in use like Bluetooth or Wifi
